Bed bugs are a source of nuisance that most households would wish to get rid of. These little horrible creatures feed on the blood from warm blooded animals and if they can’t find a human victim they could go for a cat or dog as well. In addition, eliminating them is not easy at all and it needs a serious bug control drive to do away with them.
Travellers often bring bed bugs with them to a new place where they grow quickly and start affecting the residents of the home. They usually prosper in the nooks and corners of beds, carpets and household furniture.
A common misconception about bed bugs is that they spread because of lack of hygiene, but nothing can be farther from the truth. Since these pests feed on blood and not trash, cleanliness doesn’t help in eradicating them. However, keeping the surroundings sanitized and dirt free can facilitate easy spotting of these bugs.
Another commonly held myth associated with bed bugs is that they are invisible without artificial help as they are very small. In reality bed bugs are actually big enough to be seen with naked eyes but they have a flat body which helps them vanish into little crevices and clothing folds easily, making it hard to locate them.
Bed bugs bite. They can live long without eating – up to 6 months or a year.
When it comes to cleansing a home of bed bugs, no one can do the job better than a professional pest controller, so it is better to hire such a person instead of trying to get rid of these pests on your own. However, if you don’t want to spend on a professional, the next best thing to do is to properly clean bed sheets, carpets etc. in hot water and then let them to be dried in the sun. It is necessary to seal all gaps in the walls and do away with furniture that has holes in it, so that these bugs don’t get any place to reproduce.
You probably think that it is not a priority for you to administer pest control measures for your home right now. Even if it might not have crossed your mind right now, someday in the future, for different reasons, you may put your house up for sale. Real estate agents and possible buyers alike would usually avoid a pest-infested prospect, knowing full well that it is bad investment. For instance, even you yourself would be unhappy if the property you are aiming to acquire is infested with termites. Moreover, if you are thinking about utilizing your house as a collateral for loan, there is a higher probability that a lending company would deny your loan application if they discover pest infestation when they visually inspect your property. Thus, even if the fee to hire a professional pest control company to eradicate pest infestations in your home may be high, consider it a good investment for the future resale value of your house.
